How do they determine the length of a pregnancy?

the length of pregnancy is determined from the date of your last normal menstrual period, not from the date of conception which, in most cases occurs around 14 days from your next menstrual period.

In other words, if your period started on July 1st and your next period was expected to be 4 weeks later on July 28th, then the date of conception would be around the 14th of July, give or take a couple of days on either side.

But, for the purpose of estimating the length of you pregnancy, you would be considered to be 28 days along in your pregnancy.

If your normal cycles were 30 days so that you expected your next period to be on July 30th, then your date of conception would be in and around July 16th, (July 30-14 days), but the length of your pregnancy would be 30 days.

As a reminder, the abortion pill should only be used up to 70 days (ten weeks) from the 1st day of your last menstrual period but, for confirmation, you will need to be evaluated by a physician, or his or her professional assistant or nurse practitioner.

If I need an aspiration procedure because the pill didn’t work, is it more painful than if I had done that in the first place?

As you can see, in rare cases (3in 100 for pregnancies less that 9 weeks; 7 in 100 for pregnancies between 9 and 10 weeks) you may need an aspiration procedure, which is what you would have done anyway before “the abortion pill.” On the brighter side, if an aspiration procedure is required, usually it is easier than if you had chosen the aspiration procedure in the first place.

That is because your cervix has been recently dilated by misoprostol (Cytotec) and entry into your uterine cavity through the cervix is easier. Also, most of the tissue may have been dislodged from the uterine wall so that aspiration is easier.
